Dr. Randy Pausch’s “Last Lecture” has been making its away around the web. It is a lecture which was originally given at Carnegie Mellon University, by a professor who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has only a short time to live.
As a friend of mine described it, “it’s a grounding piece that makes you remember what’s important.”
If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s well worth the time to watch it.
This is the link to the lecture which appeared on the Oprah show: http://video.stumbleupon.com/#p=ithct48cqw
A Good Sign for a Diabetes Cure

It was recently reported that scientists have essentially “cured” type I diabetes in mice, using a combination of four drugs. Previously the same Harvard scientists had been able to stop the destruction of insulin producing cells with a mixture of three drugs. By adding a fourth ingredient they have now witnessed the growth of the crucial insulin beta cells. As with many diseases, the key factor seems to be inflammation. By decreasing the inflammation of the pancreas the environment seems to allow the insulin producing cells to regenerate.
Scientists hope to begin human trials soon. For those who suffer from a pervasive and horrible condition there is hope on the horizon.

True Grit

We are currently in a crucial time for health and fitness goals. February is the month where New Year resolutions start to fade and it becomes easier to justify skipping a workout. Probably the scale isn’t showing the numbers you expected. Maybe the boredom of an exercise routine you have been doing for the past six weeks is starting to take its’ toll. Perhaps you have reached the dreaded “plateau”. Mid-February is when the gyms started to become a little less crowded.
This is the time to show your “true grit”. According to Webster’s dictionary, “grit” is defined as “brave perseverance, pluck, determination and stubborn courage”. Exactly the qualities one needs to make it to towards a health or fitness goal.
My advice is to shake things up. Make a change in your routine. Exercises that have now become easier, need to be made more difficult. Re-evaluate your nutrition. Look for alternatives that will keep you moving forward. Dig deep and find your true grit. It’s in there. You felt it on January 1st and it’s still there, you just may need to look a little deeper.
