If you are into intense training or compete in extreme environments, keeping your electrolytes balanced can be a major concern. Electrolytes are a scientific/medical term for ionic salts. They are vitally important for keeping your muscles and organs functioning correctly. The more you sweat, the more electrolytes are removed from your body and lost in the perspiration. For years, the most popular way to replace lost electrolytes has been by drinking a “sports drink” containing sodium chloride or potassium chloride. But that method has a drawback.
When you ingest a “sports drink” it can take anywhere from 30-45 minutes for the body to process the electrolytes. The Human Performance Laboratory at Duke University has found a way to speed up this process. They have developed the Enlyten Sportstrip. It’s basically a strip which dissolves in your mouth and enters your bloodstream within 5-10 minutes. Unless you carry your own IV unit, it may be the quickest way to replace lost electrolytes.
