Russia and the other countries that made up the former Soviet Union have many distinctive attributes. Rich historical backgrounds, awe-inspiring architecture and now the unfortunate distinction of claiming four of the top ten most polluted places in the world. The ten countries listed are polluted with carbon monoxide, heavy metals, radioactive dust and various toxic byproducts of mining and industry.
The list is compiled by the Blacksmith Institute which is an organization addressing the pollution issues of the world.
When looking at the details of each country on the top ten list, the most striking aspect for me is the numbers. The amount of lives drastically damaged or destroyed by pollution is staggering.
